Grizzlies extend winning streak with 2nd win over Buffaloes; host Moberly tonight

The Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) Grizzly Basketball team will try to add another mark in the win column today when they host the Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds at 7 p.m. at the West Plains Civic Center arena.

The Grizzlies' current streak stands at six games after a 74-64 victory Saturday over the Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes in Little Rock, Arkansas. The win, which was the second victory over the Buffaloes in a week, ups the Grizzlies' overall season record to 13-4.

MSU-WP took control of Saturday's game early and held a 44-20 advantage at halftime. The Buffaloes charged back in the second half, though, outscoring the Grizzlies 44-30, but it was too little too late.

"I was happy with our effort. This could have been a trap game for us," Grizzly Basketball Head Coach Jared Phay said. "We have a big week ahead, but the guys seemed focused on the day."

Balanced scoring attack

All available Grizzlies participated in the game, which resulted in a balanced scoring attack.

Freshman point guard Isaiah Wilson led the way with 11 points. Sophomore guard Byron Breland and freshman guard James "Scooter" Williams each added 9 points. Breland led the team in rebounding with seven grabs.

"It was good to see Isaiah provide a spark for us," the coach added. "We have guys who have been working hard in practice, and it's good to see them get some game experience."

Tonight's game against Moberly is the first of four Region 16 games the Grizzlies will play this week to close out the regular season. They take on State Fair Community College at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Sedalia, then travel to Park Hills Friday for a 7 p.m. contest against the Mineral Area College (MAC) Cardinals. Friday's game was rescheduled from March 10 due to inclement weather.

The Grizzlies then return home to host the Cardinals Saturday in the annual homecoming game for the regular season finale. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at the civic center.

"It will be an interesting week, but we just have to take things one day at a time," Phay said. "Moberly is always tough because they are physical, and they play hard. We need everyone to play well because we have a lot of games in a short amount of time."
